Exclusive Interview with Designer Mayank Anand

Here’s an exclusive interview with designer Mayank Anand of ‘Mayank Anand Shraddha Nigam’ label as he talks about their clothing line and gives his take on sustainable fashion.

Tell us a little bit about your clothing line

‘Mayank Anand Shraddha Nigam’ the label started about 6 years ago. Shraddha and I started out as shoe designers for men. That did not work too well because they were very few men who would wear experimental shoes. From there we even tried menswear, but eventually we both had an affinity towards handlooms and Indian fabrics and we started designing clothes for women.

What do you think about the entire concept of sustainable fashion?

Everybody talks about sustainable fashion but I don’t think most of us really understand what being sustainable really means. Most people think khadi and cotton is sustainable fashion, but it is not. There is a lot of water that gets wasted in making one meter of cotton or in dying a meter of fabric. So sustainability is not about choosing cotton; that is a misconception. I think sustainability in fashion as the way Shraddha and I look at is to buy less and use it more. That is being sustainable.

Also sustainable fashion is not only about making sustainable clothing, it’s about a sustainable way of life. We are talking at a very superficial level right now but the day we can apply it to humanity at large I think that’s when we will start to make somewhat of a difference.

When you planned to start your label, was there something you thought that you should keep in mind in terms of making your clothes eco-friendly?

We do a lot of recycling, we buy a lot of Indian textiles and we do a lot of crowd sourcing. We make sure that if people are not wearing it, give it to us so that we will rework it and give it back to you. That is something we started with. The collections that we put out last has taken us 4 years to make because it just takes that much longer for people to get rid of what they have and for us to take it and then rework it into something else and just try to make it economically viable for us.

What changes have you seen in clothing or garments over the last few years?

When we started this label we were one of the earlier players in cotton and there was a lot of georgette and chiffon happening at that time. Today when we look at the market everybody is doing the same look and everybody has gone khadi and cotton heavy and most people don’t even understand why they are doing it. Maybe they are doing it because it’s the thing to do right now? And as a business person I can understand that they want to because that’s what’s selling for them right now and if you look around people are wearing more and more of that. So the women who used to wear georgette and chiffon with embroidery are fine wearing cotton dresses now, so that’s the huge change we have seen.

Have you seen anything that was very challenging for you over the last 6 years?

Definitely – the lack of a business plan. We started with no business plan. And had Shraddha and I known what it takes to build a fashion label, I think I would have still done it Shraddha wouldn’t. She would have gone and done something else and we often discuss that. But at least we would have made an informed decision. It’s not easy but knowing me I’d do it all over again.

What are you looking forward to in the coming year?

I think what we are most exited about right now is to establish the three different lines that the brand does. So ‘Mayank Anand Shraddha Nigam’ does our signature collection which is the cotton that you see. ‘Mayank Anand Shraddha Nigam’ does kapurthala which is our heavy evening occasion wear. And ‘Mayank Anand Shraddha Nigam’ also does a cruise resort line which not many people are familiar with.

So this coming year we would like our clients and the market to be familiar with all three different lines that we do and that’s what we are working towards.
